Health Sciences

The mission of this program is to provide instruction in the skills and knowledge to secure employment in the health services industry or enter higher education programs in health careers. Instruction in career information, basic health skills, CPR and first aid, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and medical terminology is included.

PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH SCIENCES (HEA102, WPP200)

Grade Level:  9-12

This course is an orientation to the health care cluster consisting of four career majors:  Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, and Allied Health.  It is also designed to develop and enhance an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each career major area.  Communication, study and leadership skills will be emphasized as the student learns about the health care industry, health care economics, and career opportunities available.  Medial Terminology will be integrated throughout the course.  Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to focus on a career major path and make informed decisions regarding choices for continuing education and/or employment.  This course addresses the Kentucky Learner Goals and academic Expectations, Core Content for Assessment, and includes core components from the National Health Care Standards.  Supplies:  Notebook, binder, pens/pencils

HEALTH AND WELLNESS (AHS100)

Credit:  ½ (Paired with Microbiology for 1 credit)

Formerly- Human Growth and Development

Grade Level:  10-12

This 9-week course focuses on the promotion of health through assessment of individual’s growth and development across the life span.  This course is offered as dual credit with KCTCS for grades 11-12.

MICROBIOLOGY (AHS130)

Credit:  ½

(Paired with Health & Wellness for 1 credit)

This 9-week course focuses on promoting and understanding of the effects of microorganisms on the human body.   Supplies:  Notebook, binder, pen/pencils

BASIC ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY (AHS109)

Credit:  1

Grade Level:  11-12

Prerequisite:  Medical Terminology/Emergency Procedures              

Basic Anatomy and Physiology is designed to provide knowledge of the structure and function of the human body with an emphasis on normalcy. The course includes interaction of all body systems in maintaining homeostasis and promotes an understanding of the basic human needs necessary for health maintenance while explaining basic principles of inorganic and organic chemistry as they apply to physiological processes. CPR FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS/ SAFETY AND FIRST AID (CPR100, SFA100) EMERGENCY PROCEDURES)

Credit:  ½ (Paired with Med. Term. for 1 credit)

Grade Level:  10-12

Emergency Procedures will focus on current emergency techniques and infection control.  Upon successful completion of this course, each student will qualify to become certified in First Aid adult, child and infant CPR by American Heart Association.  AED & Professional Rescuer CPR certified by ARC.  This course is offered as dual credit with KCTCS for grades 11-12.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY 1 (AHS120)

(Paired with CPR/Emer. Proc. for 1 credit)                      

Grade Level: 10-12

An overview designed of the basic techniques of medical word building is provided. Once these techniques have been developed, they can readily be applied to acquire an extensive medical vocabulary. Emphasis is on basic anatomical, physiological, pathology, diagnostic procedures, and pharmacological terms. This course is offered as dual credit with KCTCS for grade 11 12. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY 2 (AHS115)

Grade Level:  10-12

Prerequisite: Medical Terminology 1

This is study of anatomical, physiological, and pathological terminology with emphasis on word structures and definition of root words, suffixes, and prefixes from Greek and Latin. The course covers basic medical word techniques emphasizing anatomical, physiological and medical terms. Supplies:  Notebook, binder, index cards, pens/pencils

NURSING SKILLS I ASSISTANT (MNA100/HEA198)

Credit:  2 (2 Blocks, 1 Semester)   

Grade Level:  11-12

Prerequisite:  Medical Terminology/Emergency

Procedures, Anatomy & Physiology, one other health science elective & Teacher Approval

** Student is required to have C or higher cumulative GPA, acceptable attendance record per MCHS attendance policy, and no level II or above offenses.

Specific knowledge and skills for students and /or nurse aides to assume the role and responsibility required in long-term care is communicated to the student through lectures, lab, and clinical practicum.  Provides knowledge and skills for nurse aides to assume the role and response required in a variety of health care settings.  This course is offered as dual credit with KCTCS for grades 11-12.  Supplies:  Book $70.00, Liability Insurance $30.00, State Testing Fee $20.00, Drug Testing $35.00, Criminal background check $25.00, Uniform Sets (2) $45.00, and Current CPR Card $10.00.

driver’s license and vehicle to travel to site.

PRACTICUM II (HEA298)

Credit: 2 (2 Blocks, 1 semester OR 1 Block all year)

Grade Level: 11-12

Prerequisite:  Teacher Approval.  Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle to travel to site.

Provides supervised on the job work experience in the health field.  Supplies:  Liability Insurance $30.00, State Testing Fee $20.00, Drug Testing $35.00, Criminal Background Check $25.00

Credit:  1 (1 Semester, 1 Block)

Prerequisite: Medical Terminology/Emergency Procedures, Anatomy& Physiology, Nursing Assistant Skills/MNA, and Teacher Approval.

Student must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle to travel to site. **Student is required to have a C or higher cumulative GPA, acceptable attendance record per MCHS attendance policy and no level II or above offenses.

This course allows students to work in the area of previous training for wages. The student must be hired in an approved health-related facility within one month of enrolling in this class. The student will perform independent study, work in the clinical area, and report to the instructor as requested. The Health Sciences Instructor and the work supervisor will complete evaluation of the student in the health facility.

Cooperative Education provides supervised on the job work experience related to the students’ education objectives.  Students participating in the Cooperative Education program receive compensation for their work. PRACTICUM I - PHARMACY (HEA198-7)

Student must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle to travel to site. **Student is required to have a C or higher

cumulative GPA, acceptable attendance record per MCHS
